Day Trip to Titusville, Florida

I had seen Sledd’s U-Pick Farm pop up on my Facebook awhile ago and, like I always do, added it to my never ending list of places to go in Florida.  The flowers typically bloom in April/May, so I’ve been patiently awaiting their arrival.  I simultaneously was waiting for the perfect opportunity to tell my boyfriend that I wanted to drive 50 minutes from his house in Deland to pick sunflowers from a field.  That window of opportunity arose when he told me he wanted to watch two basketball games in a row during March Madness and in return he “owed me.” PERFECT!

The weather that day was gorgeous, so we decided to begin our journey to Sledd’s. The cost of entry is $5/person (children 3 and under are free).  Service dogs are allowed in the flower field. Make sure to bring your own scissors or clippers to cut the flowers.  The prices for cut sunflowers are $2 for 1, $3 for 2 and $5 for 3.  They also had some kale, spinach, broccoli and other vegetables available for picking.  The field still had a ton of sunflowers but you could tell they would only last another week or so.  GOOD NEWS is that they grew a second sunflower field that is currently in full bloom!  Check out their Facebook page below for the most up to date status on the flowers as well as their hours of operation. As we were leaving, I saw a sign for blueberry picking down the street! The farm is called Meadors Blueberry Farm and is 5 minutes from Sledd’s. They offer blueberry picking for $3.95 a pound.  We didn’t go to the blueberry farm, but it would be so fun to pick some sunflowers and then blueberries!  Check out their Facebook page below for updates on when you can pick! After spending about 30-45 minutes at Sledd’s, we decided to head to Playalinda Brewing to grab a beer and some grub.  Whenever I’m heading to a place I’ve never been before, I always try and find a local brewery (and/or coffee shop) to try out.  I often find that breweries have such a distinct, local vibe and great energy.  Playalinda has two locations, the Hardware Store and Brix Project.  The Hardware Store location is closer to Sledd’s, however, The Brix Project location has a fuller food menu and full liquor bar (on top of their already lengthy beer list).

We chose the Brix Location for their brunch menu. I always opt for a flight of beer to get a full representation of the breweries offerings.  My absolute favorite beer was their Key Lime Slice.  They actually rim the glass with whipped cream! The sweet combo from the cream paired with the sour flavor of the key lime beer was ON POINT.

For food, we shared the steak and eggs and their big dill pizza.  A. Pickle. Pizza.  It was amazing and I’m absolutely going to re-create it at home at some point

Finally, we wanted to chill out and what perfect way to relax than lay on the beach?  Canaveral National Seashore was a 35 minute ride from the brewery, so we headed over the bridge to check it out.  The entrance fee is $15 per car which isn’t cheap, but most parks monitored by the government come with a price.  There are 13 different beach access parking lots so at no point did the beach feel crowded.  If you’re really feeling frisky, check out the beach off of access 13 where you can chill by the sea in your birthday suit. Note that there were non flush restrooms (no sinks) available at each access point. Also, there are no water fountains but I did see that they sold drinks at the front entrance so plan ahead!

We had a fun day venturing out to the Mims/Titusville area! Although I couldn’t see there being a ton else to do in there, it was the perfect day trip. Comment below if you know of any other hidden gems in the Titusville or surrounding areas!
